It is a typical representative of coastal wetlands in the world, home to 494 species of wild animals, including 80 species of national key protected wild animals. It is a stopover and destination for millions of migratory birds, the world’s largest breeding site for Saunder’s Gull, and the southernmost breeding site for the Red-crowned Crane and Western Pacific Spotted Seal.
There are two themed exhibition halls established in the area: the Liao River Estuary Wetland Science Popularization and Education Center and the Red Beach Wetland Science Museum, as well as wetland science popularization exhibition rooms at Panjin Vocational and Technical College, Hubin Park, and Xinglong No.1 Primary School.
Innovative “Wetland Lectures” activities have been carried out, with more than 300 “Wetland Lectures” held in enterprises, governments, communities, and campuses. The events have reached an audience of over 320,000 people.
Panjin is the demonstration project of the China Migratory Birds Conservation Network of East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF) by Global Environment Facility (GEF). From 2022 to 2023, Panjin has cooperated with China Green Foundation (CGF) in conducting the “Liao River Estuary-BMW Beautiful Home Initiative.”
