Tanjung Jabung Timur is one of the regencies in Jambi Province that has a total area of 508,600 hectares and governs a mix of protected wetlands and production forests. The Berbak-Sembilang National Park, located in Sumatra’s east coast, harbors essential ecosystem of fir tree coasts with an area of 216,651 hectares; agriculture (food and plantation) with 260,404 hectares; and riparian zone, beaches and river with 13,558 hectares. Majority of the area is a wetland and has been stipulated in Regional Regulation Number 3, 2020 on the Amendment of Regional Planning 2011-2031.

Tanjung Jabung Timur District have made enormous efforts to increase awareness on the importance of wetland values, as part of the overall management of wetlands in the district. The following events have been listed, including:

  1. Inclusion of (wetlands) environment on local school curricula. As the implementation, for example, students are engaged on the local waste management
  2. Celebration of World Migratory Bird Day in the Cemara beach, which has been listed as a National’s Essential Ecosystem Area and having international importance status as the wintering area for hundreds of thousands of migratory waterbirds in the East Asian Australasian Flyway. The celebration includes seminar involving students, nature lovers and local community
  1. Participation on annual Asian Waterbird Census coordinated by Wetlands International and National Partnership on Migratory Birds and their habitat
  1. The development of information centre in Cemara Beach as a mean for education and awareness facilities
  1. Production of films and other awareness materials on wetlands of international importance, including leaflet, magazine, and flyer
  1. Conducted public exhibition during national and regional events
  1. School visit to promote the importance of wetlands value in Tanjung Jabung Timur District, including the direct and indirect benefits gained from wetlands, as well as need to engage on the sustainable management of wetlands. The promotional materials are including general introduction on wetlands ecosystem and conservation, the rich yet fragile Berbak National Park, followed by showing films on peatlands ecosystem and the role of wetlands on disaster risk reduction
  1. Counselling for local communities on the prevention of forest and land fires, control of forest and land fires, information regarding regulation on forest and peatlands fires and protection of natural resources
  1. Establishment of conservation cadre and nature lover group, and providing presentation on general conservation issues and basic ecology, fostering love to nature, basic leadership, general knowledge on forestry including wetlands, eco-tourism, Indonesian flora and fauna, and basic knowledge on first aid and Search and Rescue
  2. In collaboration with University of Jambi, providing course on the conservation of wetland essential ecosystem.
