Hwapocheon Wetland, an intermediate stop and breeding ground for various migratory birds, including endangered storks, was seriously threatened by urban expansion and habitat damage. In response, Gimhae City has promoted continuous ecosystem conservation activities with local residents since 2008 to restore biodiversity and ecological sensitivity through ecosystem restoration and civic participation-oriented education.
Thanks to these efforts, Hwapocheon Wetland was designated as a national wetland protection zone in 2017 being recognized for its value as the largest river-type back marsh in Korea. In addition, Gimhae City was officially certified as a Ramsar Wetland City in 2025. In the future, the City plans to operate a science museum, prepare wetland conservation plans, and promote ecotourism through the Hwapocheon Wetland Conservation Management Center, which is scheduled to open in September 2025.
