The municipality of Hampigny is located on the edge of the Ramsar site of the Ponds of the Champagne Humid and the Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park. For several years, it has been committed to the preservation of biodiversity and wetlands.
To preserve and enhance the meadows of Ham, it has signed a tripartite agreement with two natural area managers. This emblematic site of 58 hectares of wet meadows belongs to the municipality. It has been managed by mowing or grazing since the 16th century and is home to several heritage species (Swamp Copper, Corncrake, Gratiola officinalis, etc.).
Hampigny’s elected officials have created a “local wetlands committee” to monitor wetland news and actions taken. They have also obtained the designation of the meadows of Ham as a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) from the Aube Department. Every year, numerous wetland awareness-raising activities take place in the town: walks around the meadows, school events, and participation in World Wetlands Day. These activities will now be supported by a renovated educational trail to showcase the town’s cultural and natural heritage.
The town of Hampigny owns 78 hectares of wet meadows. The mowing/grazing management of these meadows, which has been documented since at least the 16th century, helps preserve their agro-ecological properties. In the absence of a regulatory urban planning document or a Water Development and Management Plan, the municipality’s development is subject only to the national urban planning regulations.
To preserve its heritage, particularly its natural heritage, the town of Hampigny has entered into a management agreement for the Prairies du Ham (Ham meadows) site (58 hectares) with the Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park and the Champagne-Ardennes Natural Areas Conservatory (CEN CA) for the period 2023-2033. The Prairies du Ham are among the first Sensitive Natural Areas (ENS) to be designated by the Aube Department in 2024.
