Mungyeong City operates a guide program to provide visitors with the correct knowledge and secure professional manpower regarding the geological and academic value of wetlands, and provides educational opportunities for wetland village residents. Graduates work as nature environment guides and provide explanations to visitors by comparing the appearance of wetlands they saw in their childhood with the changes in wetlands.
Mungyeong City is commissioning a geological attraction experience program for local youth to local organizations that include natural environment guides, geology guides, and cultural tourism guides. This program utilizes all related local resources, including ecology, geology, history, and culture, to improve local students’ awareness, pride of the nature at local, and provide new experiential educational opportunities. Specific programs include a youth wetlands and geological explorer, willow observation and willow fly making experiences, toad growth process observation experiences, wetland sound walks, and feeding experiences for hungry wildlife.
Furthermore, in collaboration with residents, especially elderly individuals (grandfathers and grandmothers-aged), rice paddy farming experience activities are being conducted. Since 2020, Mungyeong City and Doline Village Agricultural Cooperative Corporation have cooperated in one of environment-friendly paddy farming projects within of the targeted farmland of the wetland protected area. This program includes activities such as traditional pesticide and chemical fertilizer-free environment-friendly farming practices and ecological experiential activities like traditional rice planting and harvesting, insect observations, and more. Through this program, various positive impacts have been observed, such as landscape improvement within the wetland conservation area, increased biodiversity in paddy fields, enhanced awareness of wetland conservation, community engagement, promotion of Doline Wetland through media coverage, and the discovery of endangered species like the Endangered Wild Animal Class II insect, diving beetle, and an increase from 6 to 26 indigenous species that inhabit Doline Wetland.
Additionally, it operates an experimental program in connection with the traditional agricultural activities of residents, such as picking schisandra, making schisandra tea, and experiencing spring vegetables (making spring bibimbap). As a result of these activities, the local people’s awareness of the protection of wetlands was improved, and the visitors donated the vegetables through the program to the local community welfare center to remind the value of the Doline Wetland itself. Environment-friendly rice planting and harvest events were promoted through various media, making it possible to publicize the value of Doline Wetland and raising citizens’ interest more widely.
A mission book for wetland karst topography education was created as educational materials, and an educational commentary and guidebook for systematic education on nature, ecology, human culture, and values in eco-tourism are in the process of being developed.
The Mungyeong Doline Wetland Exploration Center provides pre-education for visitors to acquire information about the geological and ecological value of the Mungyeong Doline Wetland and the importance of wetlands using media videos. Inside the center, there are facilities such as a media tour bus, a media experience hall, an interactive experience space, and a relaxation area.
